Computer tips: How to change a Computer’s IP Address

Computer tips: How to change a Computer's IP AddressIt happens to all of us. You are browsing the internet and suddenly you get the “Page Not Found” error. The modem and everything seems to be working and you decide to call customer service – what a hassle. Often, the problem is that you need to renew your computer’s Internet Protocol (IP). So  “How do I change my IP address?” and “Can I change my IP address?” are probably the most commonly asked questions.

Instructions

  • Click on the “Start” button and choose “Run.”
  • Type “cmd” in the box and click on “OK.” A window with a command prompt appears. It resembles the old DOS operating system.
  • Type “ipconfig /release” and press “Enter.” This releases your computers current IP addresses.
  • Type “ipconfig /renew” and press “Enter.” This assigns your computer a new set of IP addresses.
  • Type “Exit” and press “Enter” to close the window. You computer now has a new IP address.

Windows (second option)

If computer connected directly to the modem

  1. Get to a command prompt. (START, run, cmd).
  2. Type “ipconfig /release” (without the quotes).
  3. Shut down computer.
  4. Turn off computer.
  5. Turn off all ethernet hubs/switches.
  6. Turn off cable/DSL modem.
  7. Leave off overnight.
  8. Turn everything back on.

Network with Router

  1. Log into the router’s admin console. (Often http://192.168.1.1/, or search your own)
  2. Release the IP address. (Method varies by router manufacturer)
  3. Turn off router, ethernet hubs/switches, and the cable/DSL modem.
  4. Leave off overnight.
  5. Turn everything back on.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the above steps don’t resolve your connectivity issue, try unplugging your modem and/or router for a few seconds and then repeat the process.
  • The command “ipconfig” reveals the IP address assigned to your computer. If you have more than one connection to your computer (i.e. having both a wireless and LAN network card) the command “ipconfig /all” reveals all your assigned IP addresses.
  • To bring a computer back onto the network after moving it to a different location, or experiencing an unexpected outage, first release, then renew the IP address. Computers on DHCP networks often (but not always) re-establish network connectivity automatically.

Ok I have a question. I am at a campground that is offering limited wi-fi internet. 2 strikes your out. No gaming, basic internet only. Not sure but believe they are using cable co. for internet. My assumption is they are monitoring the the isp’s logging on to them. Can I change settings in computer to fool the hub? Isn’t the IP address the same on the outbound side of the server?
