Windows 8′s lock screen is easy on the eye, but – as with many of the features within the Consumer Preview – just doesn’t really work on a desktop or notebook.Thankfully it’s easy enough to disable if you’re using a desktop or laptop instead. You may know that Microsoft Management Console snap-in called Local Group Policy Editor allows system administrator(s) to tweak system core components and change default behavior of native utilities. Using the LGPE, you can easily disable the Lock Screen for all PC users. By default, Windows 8 shows Lock Screen at startup, but when it’s disabled, it takes you directly to Logon screen to choose the user account to log in to Windows.

Step 1: Initiate the Local Group Policy Editor (Win Key + R simultaneously).

Step 2: In the Run box, type in gpedit.msc and then tap Enter.

Step 3:When the Group Policy window appears, navigate to Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Control Panel -> Personalization. You can access this location from the main window or from the left hierarchy.

Step 4:On the right-hand side, you will need to double click on the “Do not display the lock screen” setting.

Step 5: By default, this option is set to Not Configured. To disable the lock screen, we need to set it to Enable. And Click on Apply

And the next time you turn on the computer, you will be greeted with the log in screen instead of the lock screen.

The popular online photo editor Picnik has been purchased by Google and will no longer be available to users without a Google+ account. However, some of the Picnik team members have created PicMonkey, a new, free photo editor.

After you drag a photo into PicMonkey.com, the image editor opens with your image on the right and the tools on the right. There are basic adjustments, like cropping, rotating and sharpening tools, as well as a huge selection of frames and textures. If you like touching up your photos you’ll find a number of options to make your face look even more beautiful, like Blemish Fix and Spray Tan. You can also add text and shapes onto your images too. However, we’re most excited about all of the awesome filters, like Warhol, Lomo, HDR, Sepia and Cross Process, which can all be adjusted and customised.

Altered photos can be saved as jpgs or pngs. Note that PicMonkey runs on Flash, so it won’t work on the iPad.

Lastly, some of the editing tools are dubbed “Royale effects.” When you use such an effect, a monkey logo shows up on the image you’re editing. It doesn’t stay on your image when you save it, but just shows up in the editor to remind you that you ventured out of the free tools. Royale effects are free to use at the moment, but a subscription service is forthcoming. Collages and other tools are also forthcoming.
